Missouri Secretary of State, Department of Revenue in Knowing, Ongoing Violation of the National Voter Registration Act
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The League of Women
After a years-long fight, Voice of the Experienced (VOTE) scored an historic victory with the passage of HB 265, a rights-restoration bill, in the Louisiana State Senate.
Missouri’s embrace of voter suppression is perturbing. With the reckless and easily fixable violations of the NVRA documented in our lawsuit, it is not only clear that the state needs to do its job and get right with the law – we also need to root out Missouri’s culture of restricting the vote and ensure access to voter registration in advance of this year’s elections.
Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Mark Walker ruled against the onerous process by which people with past felony convictions in Florida plea for restoration of their voting rights. While the impacted population is still not able to register to vote, the ruling striking the state’s cumbersome and arbitrary process is welcome news.
